President Signs Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act 

On October 8, 2008, President Bush signed into law the Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act (S. 1810), originally introduced by Senators Kennedy (D-MA) and Brownback (R-KS).  This legislation was based on research available here and summarized in this press release from Children's Hospital Boston and this press release from the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress.

Trig Palin Starts a National Discussion on Down Syndrome

Trig Palin, the 5-month-old son of Republican Vice Presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, has launched a national discussion about Down syndrome in the media.  Governor Palin learned that her son has Down syndrome from a prenatal diagnosis.  Research on how physicians deliver a prenatal diagnosis is available here and summarized in this press release.

 
New ACOG Recommendations

brianlizagreencolorMany people have asked for my thoughts on the new recommendation from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) that all pregnant women, regardless of age, be offered prenatal testing for Down syndrome.  I have submitted to the journal, Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Letter to the Editor as my response.  The journal declined to published it.
